Almost two decades ago the arbitral community first recognised the spectre of arbitral secretaries as the ‘fourth arbitrator’. Yet despite greater regulation and codification of the role of arbitral secretaries, this perception remains widespread. Recognising that this can only be detrimental to the legitimacy of the arbitral process, the ICC Young Arbitrators Forum (ICC YAF) is organizing an event to explore how – finally – we can lay the ‘fourth arbitrator’ to rest.
